Call for Papers
The WDI are pleased to invite you to take part in the second
international conference “Third Sector Innovation: Sustainability and
Social Impact” (2nd TSISSI). The focus this year is to keep raising the
profile of the valuable work of social enterprise leaders across Latin
America, to share best practices and cases of social innovations in the
areas of Social Enterprise (Revenue Generation), HR Management,
Sustainable Social and Economic Opportunities though Information
Technology and Partnerships. Sharing those experience will help NGO`s to
realize the benefits of integrating some of those innovative ideas not
only as a strategy to become more efficient, but also to become
sustainable and mainly to enhance their social impact.
The three-day conference will offer NGO’s an opportunity to share best
practices and strategies for:
- become increasingly self-sustainable by implementing appropriate
commercial activities which generates revenue and decrease donor
dependency,
- increase efficiency by integrating some appropriate management tools
and technologies,
- increase independency through the creation of public-private
partnerships.
- Retain valuable employees and volunteers
The conference will also provide practical training sessions for NGO
leaders such as business plan writing, effective communication
strategies and strategies to build social capital. The conference will
include 2 days floor show for NGO participants to display and sell the
products they are producing through their social enterprise and also to
have an opportunity to network with each other. NGO’s should indicate
their interest in participating at the floor show during the
registration process.
The conference will use a mix of keynote speakers, case studies,
learning-by-sharing and showcases of current and emerging innovations,
to provide participants with perspectives and current examples of
innovations and best practices in the increase of sustainability and
enhancement of social impact.
Opportunities to present at the conference
We invite you to submit a proposal to present at 2nd International
Conference “Third Sector Innovation: Sustainability and Social Impact”
(TSISSI).
What to Present
Innovation is about being creative and putting good ideas into action.
It’s about the development of new products, technologies and services as
well as improvements to existing products or services. We want to know
what you are doing different, better and with whom. We want to hear
about inspiring case studies, learn about exciting innovations which
increased or initiate sustainability, see stimulating and motivating new
initiatives which enhanced the social impact and find out and share the
best practices in the sector in the region.

• One-on-one feedback and editorial support by WDI.
• Scholarships to cover travel expenses to attend the conference in Sao
Paulo - Brazil, accommodation and meals.
• Regional and international promotion by WDI.

The focus of the “2nd Third Sector Innovation: Sustainability and Social
Impact” (2nd TSISSI) international conference co-hosted by the William
Davidson Institute (WDI) and Institute GESC is to keep raising the
profile of the valuable work of social enterprise leaders across Latin
America, to share best practices and cases of social innovations such as
Social Enterprise (Revenue Generation), HR Management, Sustainable
Social and Economic Opportunities though Information Technology and
Partnerships. WDI and IGESC invite you to submit a paper for
participation in the TSISSI focused on one or a combination of the
following:
Social Enterprise: The case studies should highlight:
• Case studies on social enterprises operating in Latin America,
highlighting key management issues, successes and challenges
• Proven strategies to build capacity for social enterprise
• Innovative models for financing social enterprise
• Social enterprise country assessments, including an overview of social
enterprise experience nationwide,
• key challenges and successes, and an analysis of the country’s legal
and regulatory environment for social enterprise.
HR Management: The case studies should highlight:
• Key HR management issues, successes and challenges in retaining,
motivating, empowering qualify professionals and volunteers, succession
and developing leadership in the third sector in Latin America.
• Proven strategies to implement those issues.
• Indicators / results of introducing HR strategies to the organization
Sustainable Social and Economic Opportunities though Information
Technology:
The case studies should highlight:
• Key management issues, successes and challenges to Innovate through
Information Technology in Latin America
• Describe the innovation and proven strategies to implement Innovations
• Indicators / result of innovation initiatives.
Authors should be affiliated with a civil society organization (CSO)
located in Latin America. To apply, please complete an application

All organizations interested in participating in the conference must
submit a 2-3 pages abstract of the proposed paper. Organizations
selected on the 2007 Conference will be allowed to participate if the
proposed paper focuses in one of the other areas of interest.
Organizations selected to present your cases will develop a case study
between 10 - 25 pages in length.
[1] “Social enterprise” refers to mission driven enterprises owned by or
operated to benefit nonprofit, civil society organizations. These
enterprises have a double-bottom-line aim: 1) social impact (e.g.,
creating employment/job training opportunities or other benefits for
marginalized groups or communities); and 2) financial impact (e.g.,
generating financial resources to support the social mission of the
nonprofit organization and complement philanthropic donations).

About the Conference
The conference will bring together leaders in the field to provide
greater attention, definition and legitimacy to social enterprise in
Latin America; to share practical lessons learned and encourage regional
exchange of common experience among social enterprise practitioners and
their supporters inLatinAmerica.
The Conference will include round-table paper presentations, learning by
sharing session and technical assistance provided through training
sessions on relevant social enterprise topics such as business plan
development, strategic, financial and human resource management,
marketing strategy, and social capital and networking. The topics for
the technical assistance sessions will de determine based on the
indications of interest of the NGO’s at the time of registration. The
sessions will be led by the, top University of Michigan Business School
faculty, experts and top entrepreneurs.

be considered for the William Davidson Institute NGO Alliance in Latin
America & the Caribbean. Members of the Alliance are innovative
non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that have adopted, or are creating
strategies for adopting, commercial approaches through which their
organization can become more sustainable and less dependent on donors.
The aim of the NGO Alliance is to promote networking opportunities and
